GEORGE GUTHRIE
by
HURT, RAYMOND
George Guthrie was a remarkable 19th century soldier and surgeon, writer, educator, medical reformer and politician, and three times President of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. Born in London in 1785, he became an apprentice surgeon at the tender age of thirteen, and passed the membership examination for the Royal College of Surgeons aged only sixteen. He made such an impression on the examiners that he was immediately posted to the army, where he served as a military surgeon for fourteen years, before returning to London to commence an impressive hospital career. The fascinating story of Guthrie's life from his precocious beginnings, right through to his death in 1856, is told now for the first time in this illuminating biography. It is divided into two parts; the first tells the story, and the second describes in some detail each of Guthrie's many published works.
