SWEET MANDARIN
by
TSE, HELEN
Spanning almost a hundred years, this book recounts the lives of three generations of remarkable Chinese women. It talks about topics ranging from the brutal poverty of village life in mainland China, to newly prosperous 1930s Hong Kong and finally to the UK. It shows how the most important inheritance is wisdom.

I found this book fascinating and could not put it down. It explained a part of history that I never even knew about and Helen's grandmother's story is haunting. She has lived such an up and down life, really bittersweet, that brought tears to my eyes. Afterwards, after reading about all that food, I was so hungry. Helen writes very well and I could actually hear her voice telling me about her life, and that of her mother and grandmother. I would love to visit the Sweet Mandarin one day and wish Helen and her sisters all the best with their future. |
