YOUNG HUSSAR by BIRKS, MICHAEL

The revealing journal of a young army captain serving in Spain under Wellington during the bitter fighting of 1813-14, this detailed diary offers an illuminating insight in to the day-to-day mechanics of military life during the Regency Period. Thomas Wildman was a wealthy young captain with the Hussars Brigade the dashing light cavalry brigade of the British Army - whose outfit was sent to join Wellington's Peninsular campaign late in 1813. Wildman gives a in-depth account of the day-to-day business of troop movements and discipline, alongside the gripping highpoints of mountainside skirmishes and the fine life of officers' dinners and balls. Michael Birks has meticulously edited this diary and he provides useful background information and commentary to the events described as well as an account of Wildman's career both before and after the war. Wildman went on to fight at Waterloo and became the owner of Newstead Abbey in Nottinghamshire.
