Review: The updating of this book could not have come at a more opportune time with the recent terrorist attacks in London and Bali and the ongoing troubles in Afghanistan and Iraq. Barry Davies, an SAS veteran and knowledgeable expert in the area of terrorism, has produced a history of terrorism and terrorist organisations in the 20th and 21st centuries. It also challenges the reader in terms of understanding matters such as the antecedents of modern terrorism (based on the Palestinian/Israeli conflict); working out the difference between a ’terrorist’ and a ‘freedom fighter’; dealing with terrorism by tolerance and the understanding of cultures and understanding the atrocities taking place in Iraq today.
This book is a must for those wanting an insight into the various terrorist groups that exist and operate all over the world, ranging from the relatively obscure Marxist-Leninist Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement in Peru to the more visible and well known Hamas, fighting for the Palestinian cause. It also describes in some detail a number of attacks carried out by terrorist organisations ranging from Munich in 1972 to Beslan in 2004 and deals with counter-terrorist organisations, the tactics they use to thwart adversaries and the future of terrorism.
