DUNKIRK
by
SEBAG-MONTEFIORE, HUGH
The rescue in May 1940 of British soldiers fleeing capture and defeat by the Nazis at Dunkirk was not just about what happened at sea and on the beaches. The evacuation would never have succeeded had it not been for the tenacity of the British soldiers who stayed behind to ensure they got away.

I bought a copy of the book on the ferry to Calais because;
1) It looked the most interesting on display;
2) You get lots of pages for your money, and;
3) It covered something of which I knew little.
A few days later I started to read it. It was rivetting stuff. Accounts from all section of society were included, from Lord Very Posh to the lad who had done nothing in his short life, but gave his all to help his fellow countrymen in their hour of need.
On a more personal note, the book told me of the sinking of SS Lancastria on 17/07/1940 off St Nazaire. At the time I was on the Ile de Noirmoutier, which is very close to St Nazaire - I visited the site of a Commonwealth war grave near the beach where I had read of the event. There I found the graves of named and unnamed victims; most were around the same age as my son; it was a very sobering moment.
Buy it, read it, reflect on it. If you are not affected by it, you are either heartless or soulless, or both. |
